Aspect Matters:

Consider the aspect of your border—whether it faces north, south, east, or west. Different plants thrive in different light conditions. Consider various locations in the garden and consider what will work,  so start with sunlight direction, position, and micro climate. Then decide on what type of planting you desire for your garden and or various parts of the garden. Once you understand what you can and cannot plant it will make the next step easier. Its a whittling down process, so the next question is, Do want low maintenance or are you prepared to stuck in to some maintenance? (or us!)

Lets start by considering the main border, that of the backdrop border. These borders create a backdrop that forms a natural corridor along your boundary lines. The whole planting format needs to mesh together to seamlessly create a harmonious balance. Start with larger plants at the back and work your way forward getting gradually smaller with small flowering perennials at the front. Be sure to dot evergreens in a staggered sequence so as to give year round colour and a good canvas base. If your borders are big enough you may also be able to plant a trees towards the back. Once the basics are in you can mix and match with your preferred plants to match your own preference and palette. Here are just a few base garden planting schemes for you to consider.
